Photographers are not Criminals

21 04 2008

If you can’t see the above video view it here.

Once again we are faced with another case of a photographer in the UK being treated like a criminal. This is now beginning to make my blood boil. It seems the only cameras accepted in this country are those with CCTV written on them.

For more on this particular case take a look here.

I think it’s about time all our UK readers sent a wee email to their local MP or MSP letting them know of their concerns on this issue and again for every occasion they get been stopped, hassled, detained or assaulted for taking photographs in a public place.

We should not let this lie.

UPDATE: There is a Downing Street petition here, asking the Prime Minister to clarify the laws surrounding photography in public places. If you are a UK citizen, make sure you put your name to it.

The Photografr.com Fifty

16 10 2007

As Photografr.com approaches it’s 1000th post (It’s been going down in the last few days as I trim out the pic links that don’t work any more), I’ve been looking for a way to highlight some of our earlier photographs without re-posting, or posting a list of links.

Those paying attention to this post may have realised I found my format. The video slideshow.

I’ve been using ProShow to make slideshows of my own photographs for my family, though I never thought until now to apply it to Photografr.com. I plan on making one of these videos every two or three months. I think it’ll be a great way to look back at some of the wonderful photography that’s been posted in the past.

I’m always on the lookout for alternatives to the way I’m currently doing it. If you have any ideas let me know in the comments. If you are viewing this in a feed reader, you may need to click through to the site to view the video, or visit the Vimeo page.

update: I’ve re-made the Photografr.com Fifty on Viddler so that I can add links in the comments for all the pictures. Apart from the 4×3 / 16×9 difference, let me know what you prefer. Are the comments useful or distracting?

Video: 100 Days of EarthShots.org II

7 10 2007

This is a stunning collection of still photography from Earthshots.org. Always one to steal pick up on an idea, I think I’ll start doing this for Photografr.com site in the near future. In the mean time credit goes to the guys over at EarthShots.org for highlighting some extremely beautiful photography. Their site is well worth a regular visit.

If viewing from a feed reader, you may need to click through to Photografr.com to see the video.

Animoto: Animate Your Photography

16 08 2007

animoto For the last six months, I’ve been looking for an easy way to use some of my photos to create animated videos. I had settled on ProShow, but it was still a fair amount of hard work and concentration, when really all I wanted was for the software to do it for me.

Today I received an email inviting me to try Animoto, and within ten minutes my first video had been created…and it was pretty impressive.

All I had to do was allow Animoto to use photographs from Flickr (though it could have been from a number of different sites), select a set, and upload an mp3. The system then took about five minutes to generate the video, analyzing the photographs and music to match them together perfectly.

The resulting video can then be shared on any number of social websites and in the future it will be possible to download the video in different formats.

This service is free for 30 second video, but a full-length option is available for $3 or unlimited use for $30 per year. Both these options seem like great value to me.

I’m extremely impressed with Animoto. I think it’s going to be huge on web-sites and social networks like Facebook and Myspace. The effort required to make a good looking video is next to none. How perfect for the current generation of web users.

Click to view my video. WordPress won’t let me embed these videos yet, but I’m sure it won’t be long. Give it a go yourself, and leave links in the comments so we can see your efforts too.

[UPDATE: Download Squad have picked up on Animoto today. Worth a read]
