Photographer’s Caption: Had one of those fantastic mornings out at Bangalley Headland with my mate Brad last friday. The sky just exploded into colour with that magnificent band across it.

This is a single exposure with a Cokin GND8. I was tempted to crop that light blue on the left (its bright cause the cloud stopped at the colour) but it somehow lost the impact of the bands.

Hope everyone is going well..more to come I hope.

Photographer’s Caption: So, I generally wander around with at least two different cameras on me. My average is 3-4. On big road trips I will carry 5 or 6. Granted, I don’t usually like using more than 2-3 at any given time, but I treat cameras like the tools they are. Certain cameras are suited better for certain jobs. As you might expect then, I tend to use my different cameras in completely different circumstances. For example, the pinhole is certainly my go-to camera for really nasty weather. The Pentax 6×7 is my workhorse. The Holga makes a good pocket camera. Etc.

But I also tend to use different cameras to photograph the same scene, and even the same composition. It is not uncommon for me to double or triple up a photo I just shot with my Pentax 6×7 with my pinhole and then my Holga.

One of the aspects I enjoy most about film photography is the lack of instant feedback. Not knocking instant feedback mind you, it is one of the best teaching tools. But there is something to be said about not knowing just how things are going to turn out, particular when cameras like pinholes and Holgas are involved. I generally have a decent idea of how each will treat a scene, but I very rarely know with any degree of certainty just what the results will be.

There is also the factor of being able to go home, develop the film and prints, and wait three weeks, let the fresh memories of the outing fade and then to go back and look at each camera’s version of that moment. And I will gravitate toward one rendering or another, for various reasons. So even though I usually end up with slightly repetitive reproductions, at the same time, they usually are fairly different just based on the subtle characteristics of each camera.

Such is a good example with the Pentax and pinhole versions of Panther Beach. Normally I would favor one, and post it and the other would just get filed away. In this case, it would have been the Pentax version being posted. The sharpness it lends to the sand, which is the focus of the image, strengthens what I wanted to photograph. The pinhole’s version is certainly really nice too, and I am sure there will be those who favor it over the Pentax version, which is neither right nor wrong, just personal preference. But for me, the pinhole just didn’t emphasize the qualities that mattered to me at this moment. Instead though, it does emphasize other qualities of the scene. So perhaps at some point in the future, this image will swing over into my favor. Who knows? So I create both.

I did think though that the pair of them created a great demonstration on how different cameras function and create in different ways.

Photographer’s Caption: So for now I will continue more or less chronologically.

After leaving Natural Bridges, Aaron, Josh and I met up with Jim "I am only a land mammal half the time" Patterson and we poked around a few more beaches. If I remember correctly there was Laguna Creek and Four Mile. Though guess it could have been Three or Five. It was definitely a number less than ten. How about that.

We then broke for a pre-sunset dinner and met up with the California Chapter of the Aaron Reed Fan club comprised of Dawn and Lisa and Rich "Double Rainbow" Capture, sorry Rich, not going to attempt your actual last name. And I owe you for that whole double rainbow bit, it still pops into my head at inopportune moments. What does it mean?

It was good times all around, all those guys are a great bunch and we there was much laughter, joking and geeking out about photography.

We then headed to Hole-in-the-Wall which leads to Panther Beach, one of Jim’s favorites spots. Thanks again Jim for sharing it with us, it was grand.

Anyway, I snagged this shot not long after wandering onto the beach, the light was just right to accent the nice curve in the sand, so I played with that. The next shot I am going to post is almost identical to this one, but taken with the pinhole. I will talk more about that when I post, but for now, I have stuff to do before sleeping tonight. Hoping for clear skies tomorrow up at Lost Lake for my star trails class. Crossing fingers. Of course, even without clear skies, I am sure I can come up with something to show them to photograph.
